By Ad-Lib There are some things that are just beyond logical explanation and to exemplify one of those things- Human Relationships. Sometimes we never know why we feel the way we do, or why others feel the way they do towards us-just that that is the way it is. Angel Eyes captures that, but unfortunately not very well. The story starts off at the scene of an accident in which Sharon Pogue (Jennifer Lopez) is the officer on duty, who is also comforting someone involved in the accident. The scene blacks out to a year later. Sharon is a zealous cop with a past that is less than rosy. Ostracized for calling the police to arrest her father in a domestic violence incident, she longs for the love of her family again. As her parents are renewing their wedding vows, she receives an invitation but is in two minds whether to attend or not. Catch (Jim Caviezel) is a man similar to her but in a different way. Though he has a past to hide, he has totally run away from it and is living a meager existence by doing good deeds to people. The two meet at the scene of a shoot-out where Catch saves Sharon’s life after tailing her to the scene of the attack. The two meet casually after that and she instantly finds him “cute.” He finds her to be an angel though he is not open about any of his feelings. After a pretty convincing and truly sweet series of events, their lives do come together and they are both happy with each other. It is at this time that she discovers a lot of toys in his apartment. This puzzles her. They go to a Jazz club and Catch all of sudden starts playing the trumpet perfectly. Upon exiting, a man who claims to be his friend calls him Steven Lambert. Catch follows his instincts and runs away. Sharon does a background check and finds out that Catch is the same man she saved before. In that accident he lost his family-his wife and child. That is the burden he carries. Sharon on the other hand attends her parents wedding ceremony to reconcile with her father. But as with all things human, she cannot bring her father to love her again. From the outset it looks like an attack of the ego. But Catch does face his demons, eventually. He visits the grave of his family, makes a speech and goes to catch up with Sharon. At the end of the charade, Sharon and Catch at least have each other. Do not expect any excitement from this movie. This is a movie about real emotions like coping with loss. Though the treatment of the circumstances is very good, some parts of the movie will put you to sleep. Personally, I felt that the romance between Lopez and Caviezel was superb in a special way. Caviezel (An Eric Roberts look-alike) always looks like he needs a bath and just doesn’t have the good looks to match up with Lopez, nor does he have the acting talent. Lopez is a good actress, versatile and vibrant and that means that she is going to probably have a better career in acting than singing. Overall, I would give Angel Eyes a 4 out of 10. |
