Incredible Hulk powers to the top

The last remake of the Incredible Hulk was in 2003

The Incredible Hulk has powered its way to the top spot of the US box office chart, early figures show.

The green superhero remake took $54.5m (£27.9m) on its opening weekend pushing last week's number one Kung Fu Panda - $34.3m (£17.6m) - into second.

The weekend's other new entry, The Happening - directed by M Night Shyamalan - was in third spot taking $30.5m (£15.6m).

You Don't Mess With The Zohan fell into fourth place in its second weekend.

Adam Sandler's comedy, which opened in second place last week, took $16.4m (£8.4m).

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull fell two places to fifth spot with $13.5m (£6.9m).

Sex and the City, meanwhile, fell out of the top five in its third weekend, taking $10.2m (£5.2m) and sixth place.

Paul Dergarabedian, of box office tracker Media By Numbers, said year-on-year box office sales had been up for three weeks running.

The last Incredible Hulk remake - Hulk, directed by Ang Lee - performed better than the new version on its opening weekend in 2003, taking $62m.

The new Marvel Studios remake is directed by Louis Leterrier, who made the Transporter films.
